Individuals eager to work
JULY 2009 - If you’re one of the many regular Wednesday recyclers who drop off items at the Wellington Recycling Center, you’re likely acquainted with several of the city employees and long-time volunteers Patty Hatcher and Mike Hall who work at the center.
Mike and Patty - a brother/sister duo - volunteer there rain or shine each Wednesday and Saturday. Both are friends of Futures as Mike has received services from Futures and is a former Angel Clean worker. “Mike and his sister are very community minded,” says Cristy Newlin, day supports coordinator. “Mike has formed some really neat friendships with city workers and patrons that come in through this volunteer opportunity. He’s got a very strong work ethic.”
Recently, another individual who receives services from Futures began volunteering there. Jeremy Young, is also known for his strong work ethic. “He’s very active,” says Cristy. “He’s an on-your-feet sort of guy and is ready to pitch in whenever there is a need. With contracts in the workshop being scarce, and Jeremy liking to contribute in some way, this was a great match for him.”
Another production worker, James Walton, did a recent volunteer project with the Take Charge Challenge. “They needed someone to drop off the Take Charge posters to area businesses,” says Cristy. James completed the project in record time. James also doesn’t stay home much in the summers. He’s frequently out at the ball fields running the score boards. James is interested in becoming certified to be an umpire and will be looking to complete the certification sometime this winter.
If you have volunteer or work opportunities ideas for these folks, please give Cristy Newlin a call!
