Then & now: former Head Start student prepares for college

May 2009 - Head Start exists for the purpose of helping to build school-ready children and self-sufficient families.

Futures is proud of a high school student who got his start in our Head Start program 15 years ago. Brandon Hartzell is one of our own. He is DSP, Donna Furman’s son and also works for Futures as a part-time clerical support when he is not at school, participating in school activities or working at Apple Mart.

Brandon remembered a lot about his days spent in Futures preschool. He remembered his teachers Theresa, Janet and Maria and some of the things he learned like brushing his teeth and what to do in case of a fire. He enjoyed field trips and recalls making lots of crafts as well as the fun he had on the playground and in classroom centers where he says he played games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. He says, “one of my fondest memories was learning how to swim when we had the indoor pool. Colette was my instructor.”

On May 17, 2009 Brandon will be accepting his high school diploma as part of the Wellington High School commencement ceremony. This fall, Brandon says he most likely will be headed to Friends University where he has earned a scholarship to obtain a bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science.
