Program families go to the zoo!

JUNE 2009 - Children’s Services staff organized a social/emotional event on June 4th for families in our services which was on a much larger scale than most. Instead of meeting in the FRC or Wellington library for their usual socializations, a group of 150 parents and children met at the Sedgwick County Zoo for an afternoon of educational fun. Futures staff were able to negotiate an affordable admission price for families which enabled so many to take part. Futures even provided transportation to three families who would have not been able to attend otherwise as well as lunch and water bottles for all attending.

Infant/toddler specialist, Paula Diver shares, “the 0-3 zoo trip was a fabulous and fun experience for all. This was a natural learning opportunity for all of our families that was affordable and convenient. When I think about how we talk to families about spending one-on-one time with their children - this was a wonderful opportunity to do just that. I have had numerous parents thank us for such an opportunity for their family to experience.”

One note of thanks from a parent stated, “thank you for a wonderful day at the zoo…you guys went out beyond the call of duty to provide a great fun and learning experience for the whole family.”

Family support specialist Jennifer Kinyon says plans are in the works for additional socializations which take place in natural learning environments such as a trip to the Wellington Aquatic Center’s kiddie pool in August and Art in the Park in September.

  • Thanks for ‘Walking a Mile in My Shoes!’ - Over 200 walkers, runners and rollers came out to show their support for people with developmental disabilities.
  • Futures now on Facebook - March 2010 - With over 700 visits to our page within a two-week time span, the Futures Facebook page looks to be a good way to inform the public about what we do.

  • Birth-K Alliance Early Childhood Block Grant Report to the Community - Futures is a participating partner in the Birth-K Alliance for the Wichita MSA which includes Butler, Harvey, Sedgwick and Sumner Counties. You are invited to review the provided report which was released in December 2009.
  • 2008 Head Start Report to the Public - This report provides information on our Head Start program. It covers our monitoring review and financial audit, numbers of children and families served, parent involvement activities, percentage of children who received medical and dental exams, how we prepare preschoolers for the kindergarten transition and budget information.
