More Families Can Now Qualify for No-Cost Preschool

Do you have a child who will be 3 or 4 by Aug. 31? At the start of the 2022-2023 school year, Futures Unlimited will partner with the USD 353 school district to open two preschool classrooms at Kennedy Elementary School, offering a total of four preschool sessions. This means additional preschool slots will be available to the community with expanded eligibility criteria enabling more families to attend.

“We will have the capacity to serve 60 children at Kennedy next year,” says Christa Jones, director of program services. “This will essentially double our preschool enrollment housed in district buildings.”

Families might qualify for free preschool if they are able to answer yes to at least one of the following:

  • Parent feels child has a developmental, social, behavioral, or emotional delay or concern
  • Qualifies for free lunch
  • Single parent family
  • Child has DCF referral
  • One parent was 19 or younger at child's birth
  • Either parent lacks HS diploma/GED
  • Limited English speaking
  • Child qualifies for migrant status
  • Child experiencing homelessness

“The best part of this expansion,” says Cindy Bauer, enrollment point-person for Futures, “is a larger number of families will be eligible for this preschool at Kennedy since its eligibility criteria are separate from our usual criteria. I urge ALL families with children who will be 3 or 4 by August 31 to apply.”

Please share this great information with your friends and family and urge them to apply.
